ThingMagic Case Study - Wegmans

 Wegmans

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a supermarket chain with over 70 stores in the Mid-Atlantic region. The family-owned company, founded in 1916, is recognized as a retail industry leader and innovator and one of the country's largest privately held companies, with annual sales of more than $4 billion, and over 36,000 employees.

An early adopter of new technologies, Wegmans was one of the first supermarkets to adopt barcode scanning in 1974, and to implement electronic discounts in 1990. Robert Wegman co-chaired the public policy subcommittee for the grocery industry development of the universal product code (UPC), in use throughout the world with barcode and other retailing and item tracking applications. The company was also a founding member of the MIT Auto-ID Center, which significantly advanced the development and use of the electronic product code (EPC) for RFID.
